Depends upon whether you have airflow control flaps, and if they are open or closed.

I could on my old 3.0sd.  It also had the flappy things

I can with mine but with others I think I might have seen a grill in picture but hard to tell?

How do they open and close, electrical?

Some are electrical, some airflow driven, and some not even fitted.....though the reasons for each version I am not sure of.  My X6 has none in that area but I have seen others with!  Might be to do with the engine/spec?

Non fitted on my car, its an 08 plate 3.0sd..
I can see the radiator etc right through the grills,
If it had been fitted with flaps, it mightve stopped the a/c rad getting damaged, from stones...

Airflow control flaps fitted to my 2012 4.0d, can't move them by hand so I guess they are electrically operated.

None on mine.  Didnt know if it was something to do with the adaptive suspension setup or the 4 zone ac

They are fitted as part of the effecient dynamics according to the information I got with car it apparently warms up quicker and creates a better slip stream when in the closed position
