40D now remapped....

Post by 40D » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:20 pm

Got my X5 40D remapped at the weekend by BW chip tune and and what a difference! Pick up is much faster with scary amounts of torque and picks up just as quick at 80+ as it does from 20, I can only compare it to when I've driven a cayenne turbo. BHP now in the region of 360 and 700NM.

All in all it was worth the 7 hour round journey down from manchester and MPG increased to from 28.5 on the way down to 30.5 on the way back (heavy right foot both ways :D )

Big thanks to Jason and the guys at BW Chip tune for sorting me a great deal for mentioning the board

Interesting! What year is your E70? Mine is 6 months old and am interested in doing the same.

40D now remapped....

Post by jason@bwchiptune » Fri Dec 16, 2011 9:23 pm

Thanks 40D for the bwchiptune remap feed back

Glad you enjoyed the trip back up north with 3.5 hours driving

May have to add a few more horse to mine to keep up with you!!

Torque and power delivery from these 4.0D's are amazing and after a remap is like having an extra turbo fitted with a rocket up both tail pipes

Bet you had loads of fun on the way home with a big grin on your face

The as requested by your insurance the speed limiter is still in place On you X5 4.0D

Wow.....serious grin factor :driving: :D

What's the limit that the torque converter can handle?

@40D, so by the sound of things you told your insurer about the remap. Did they hike the premium by much? I'd also be very interested and sounds like the performance hike is dramatic!

@ jason, what are the downsides if any e.g. increased engine wear, and why don't the manufactures extract the additional performance themselves?

My increase was £0 but that was partly because insurers cocked up !

BMW have to design the car for many markets and therefore limit certain things because of the conditions the car will be in and the type/grade of fuel available in all countries. Here in the UK conditions are favourable and we have good fuel so shouldn't realy cause the car problems at all although of course you are putting additional strain on the car

We always ask the customer what they would like to see from there remap
If they don't know then we would suggest which type of remap they may like after asking them a few questions
As 535dboy said but also if they produced more power they would be in a different class bracket and would cost more to buy
They would also have problems selling the other models
Auto boxes can handle alot more torque the manuals
We did a lot of testing on all our BMW auto boxes in our own cars to test how much they could take
The max my auto box would take before it any where near to slipping was well over 600 ftlbs (800nm)
we normally run ours around 550ftlbs (745nm)
We kept 40D's torque limit under 700nm with a smooth power and torque output
As for wear we have a good few cars petrol and diesel which we have tuned from new or a few years old which have been passed down from our customers to customers which now have the mileage of flying to the moon and now are on there way back to earth
a good few of these are taxi's and one of our own staff cars
There are a good few cars we have made the remap for other tuners which have been dyno dynamics rolling road tested like PDtuning's 335d which is used every day and made over 750nm of torque
View there 335d on the dyno on YouTube

Jason your mapping sounds superb and obviously makes a substantial difference. Some great feedback on the net about you guys at BW Chiptune. I'm very keen (cost dependant!).

Can you please PM a price for the same sort of map you've done for "40D". Might get it done next month. Thanks.

Thanks for the review 40D. Great to hear your experiences. Anything to update or add now that you've lived with it for a few months. Improved MPG, any issues at all with the car?

sorry for the dissapearing act....

Nothing but positive feedback to report after nearly 6 months, I'd highly recomend this chip. I love taking people out in it who aren't expecting the torque and watching the shock on their face as they leave leave a deep inprint in my seats :D

mpg is definetley up too, 32 ish on a run crusing at 80

Thanks again Jason, well worth the long return trip

(my insurance premium didnt hike, after much negotiation - they originally wanted +£2,500 however after threatening to leave we settled on £0 provided the 155mph limiter was kept in place)

Interesting about the limiter. I know the 40D is quick, but will it go that fast with a remap? I though the gear ratios and engine rpm limits would keep it away from that magic number. Be very interesting to go around somewhere like Millbrook to see just how quick these chipped versions will really go. 130mph in a standard E53 was impressive, but 155mph.... :D :driving:

Don't understand last para

Why would insurance company say it was an extra £2500 on your premium and then just roll over and say don't worry about it after all just because you threatened to leave. Not logical, particularly in view of the limiter comment given i assume uk insurer and car wouldn't be doing 155 or over on uk roads anyway. I also don't see that an X5 would go far over 155 I at all. Similarly mapped 535Ds were only making 172 (gps) so a brick like an X5 would struggle to get anywhere near that
