Re: Winter Tyres Vredestein Wintac v's Pirelli Scorpoion Ice and Snow
I have the Vreds in that size on my 4.8iS for 4 ski seasons now and 5/6 months wear in the winter (15k or so). I think that they are fantastic - amazing grip in all conditions. I drive up to a place 2000m up with uncleared roads and no issues. Also found them good for hammering down the autobahn at ...

Re: Snow Chains
I went for a set of the Michelin Composite ones - quite widely stocked and pretty cheap - well under £100. Have them at Halfords/Tesco and I got mine at Costco for around £65. No view on performance as still in the bag but should be easy to sell when the car goes! Personally I wouldn't spend too muc...

Useful find - thanks
Off to my lock-up at the weekend to check depth on my Vreds and swap-over.
I think I can get another year out of them.

Re: Snow Chains
Yup - a set of winter tyres There are some serious disadvantages for chains - 1. On performance, they only really work on packed snow and at low speeds (30 mph) so are quite inflexible. They are also a bugger to take on and off - I've done it in the dark, on a slope and in a snowstorm and it's no fu...

Re: diesel or petrol
I swapped out of a 3.0d to a 4.8iS in 2009 (both cars 2004). My diesel had done 42k and the 4.8 had done 28k (with a BMW Approved Used Warranty). I paid £1.5k which shows the difference in depreciation -effectively the cost of the warranty. I used both cars to drive 4-5 miles into the City of London...

Re: Do I need Winter Rubber?
Have a look at flight or package holiday ski prices for the February HT break! For a family of 4, that's where driving really makes sense. Even doing 20ish mpg in a 4.8iS with roofbox, it's about 5 fill-ups (£500ish), £140 eurotunnel and around £40 each way for French tolls (well worth it!). And no ...

Re: Winter wheel/tyre advice for E53 4.6is
+ 1 for the Vreds. Had them 3 winters and superb. I went for the BMW recommended 18 wheel all round for my 4.8iS. The narrower the tyre, the better it is on snow. Admitedly it doesn't look as good but depends on your priority. A winter set-up on 20s will still be way better than summers however I wo...

Re: Do I need Winter Rubber?
Hi, I drive my 4.8iS out twice a year to my place in Obergurgl at 2000m. In answer to your questions, it is mandatory in Bavaria and Austria to have winter rubber. I think the wording actually talks about "appropriateness" or similar (in German clearly) but the effect is that you will need...

Re: Gearbox oil service near Telford ?
I use Specialist Cars of Shrewsbury. Always found Dave the owner to be honest and straightforward and he gets my business for the X5 and Z1 every year.
Be warned though, it is not a smoked glass/cappuccino machine type establishment but neither are you paying for them.

LED headlights
Does anyone have these yet?
Interested in views on performance/looks compared to xenons?
Do you still have the bright angel eye driving lights?
I'm actually speccing up an X3 rather than X5 but no facelift models here for a month or so.
Any views of early adopters gratefully received.

Re: Critique my spec
I'm going for the variable dampers on the X3.
I'm lucky (for Chelsea) that I can park outside my house but it's still outside - hence the heater!
Good luck with it - look forward to seeing some pics.

Re: Critique my spec
Very interesting - I am in the process of speccing up a very similar combo albeit an X3 35D - for London I am better with an X3 rather than X5. Going for carbon black. I like the idea of contrasting aluminium window surrounds and rails as carbon black (albeit bluey in sunlight) is pretty dark. I am ...
